How to Reduce Image File Size Without Losing Quality
A large image file can slow down a website, blow past an email attachment limit, or eat up storage on your phone. The good news is that most images — especially photos straight from a modern camera or phone — have plenty of room to shrink before anyone would notice a quality difference. Here's what actually works.
1. Resize to the dimensions you actually need
This is the single biggest lever. A photo taken on a modern phone might be 4000×3000 pixels or larger — far bigger than the space it will ever occupy on a webpage, in a document, or on a social media post. Resizing an image down to the pixel dimensions it will actually be displayed at can cut file size dramatically, often more than any compression setting alone. 2. Choose an efficient format
PNG is lossless and great for graphics, but it's usually a poor choice for photos because it can't compress complex, photographic detail very efficiently. Switching a photo from PNG to JPG or WebP, or from JPG to WebP, often shrinks the file substantially with little to no visible quality change. 3. Adjust the compression quality setting
JPG and WebP both use adjustable lossy compression. Quality settings in the 70–85% range typically produce a file 3–5x smaller than a 100% quality export, with a difference in sharpness that's hard to spot at normal viewing sizes. Going much lower than that starts to introduce visible blocky artifacts, especially around sharp edges and text. 4. Avoid repeated re-compression
Every time you re-save a JPG at a lossy quality setting, you lose a little more detail — even if the visual difference is small each time, it accumulates. Where possible, keep an original high-quality copy and generate compressed versions from that original, rather than repeatedly compressing an already-compressed file.
5. Strip unnecessary metadata
Photos often carry embedded metadata — camera settings, GPS coordinates, timestamps — that adds a small amount of extra file size and can also be a privacy consideration if you're sharing the image publicly. Re-encoding an image (for example, through resizing or format conversion) typically removes most of this metadata as a side effect.
